{"id":20514,"date":"2026-06-05T09:34:57","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T16:34:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/breakthesilencedv.org\/?p=20514"},"modified":"2026-05-25T09:51:22","modified_gmt":"2026-05-25T16:51:22","slug":"loving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/breakthesilencedv.org\/?p=20514","title":{"rendered":"Loving Me Back to Safety: What My Husband Learned Loving a Survivor"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Iris Pendelton<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Love After Trauma <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, my husband and I were invited to do a local radio interview about something deeply personal\u2014what it means to love, support, and build a life with someone who has survived domestic violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a powerful conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because while survivor stories are often told through the lens of pain, escape, and recovery, there\u2019s another part we don\u2019t talk about enough:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What it looks like to be loved after trauma.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Learning What Safety Really Means<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If my husband were to describe what he has learned, I believe he would say this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Loving a survivor requires patience, understanding, and a willingness to redefine what safety truly means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the beginning, there were moments he didn\u2019t fully understand. Times when my reactions seemed bigger than the situation in front of us. A shift in tone. A pause in conversation. A misunderstanding that carried more weight for me than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not because I wanted it to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But because my mind and body had been trained to protect me long before I ever felt safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Healing Doesn\u2019t Happen Overnight<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most important lessons we\u2019ve learned is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Healing is not instant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Love does not erase fear overnight.<br>A healthy relationship does not undo years of survival mode all at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even in a safe, loving marriage, past trauma can show up in unexpected ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were moments when I needed reassurance.<br>Moments when I shut down instead of speaking.<br>Moments when peace felt unfamiliar because chaos had once been normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And in those moments, my husband had to learn something important:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wasn\u2019t just reacting to the present\u2014I was responding to what my past had taught me to expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Unlearning Fear, Learning Trust<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, I had my own work to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I had to learn:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>That he was not my past<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That disagreement did not mean danger<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That love could be calm, steady, and safe<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That I could express my feelings without being punished<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That vulnerability did not mean giving someone power to hurt me<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Trust, for me, was something I had to rebuild piece by piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Supporting a Survivor Really Looks Like<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you asked my husband what changed for him, I believe he would say this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He had to grow in how he communicates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He learned that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tone matters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Timing matters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gentleness matters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consistency matters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating safety wasn\u2019t about saying \u201cI love you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was about showing it\u2014every single day\u2014through patience, honesty, reassurance, and follow-through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>You Don\u2019t \u201cFix\u201d a Survivor\u2014You Stand Beside Them<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During our radio interview, we talked about something that felt especially important:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supporting a survivor is not about fixing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trauma doesn\u2019t disappear just because the relationship has changed. It can affect communication, trust, intimacy, decision-making\u2014even how someone receives love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What survivors need is not someone to repair them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They need someone willing to understand, to listen, and to walk alongside them as they heal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Seeing Strength Instead of Brokenness<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the greatest gifts my husband has given me is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has never seen me as broken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even in moments when I struggled to see my own strength, he saw it clearly. He stood beside me as I reclaimed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>My voice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>My confidence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>My joy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>My identity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>My peace<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>He has been there for the hard moments\u2014the triggers, the tears, the setbacks\u2014but also for the quiet, beautiful moments of growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Healthy Love Actually Feels Like<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Loving a survivor has taught him something powerful:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Love should feel safe.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not like control, fear, walking on eggshells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Real love:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is patient<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Listens without judgment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Makes space for healing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Does not weaponize pain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It creates a home that feels peaceful\u2014not unpredictable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How We Learned to Grow Together<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We haven\u2019t handled every moment perfectly. But we\u2019ve handled them together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve learned to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pause when emotions run high<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Revisit conversations when we\u2019re calm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communicate honestly, even when it\u2019s hard<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes that looks like saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI need a moment.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cThat reminded me of something painful.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI\u2019m not upset with you\u2014I\u2019m just overwhelmed.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Healing in marriage isn\u2019t about pretending the past didn\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s about building a future where the past no longer controls the outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Love After Abuse Is Possible<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Doing that radio interview together reminded me of something deeply meaningful:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Domestic violence doesn\u2019t just affect the relationship where the abuse happened.
