{"id":20516,"date":"2026-06-19T09:53:18","date_gmt":"2026-06-19T16:53:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/breakthesilencedv.org\/?p=20516"},"modified":"2026-05-25T10:31:18","modified_gmt":"2026-05-25T17:31:18","slug":"lgbtq","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/breakthesilencedv.org\/?p=20516","title":{"rendered":"Domestic Violence Beyond the Stereotype: Why LGBTQ+ and Non-Traditional Relationships Must Be Part of the Conversation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Shannon Brown<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> LGBTQ+: Abuse Doesn\u2019t Have One Face<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When people think about domestic violence, they often picture a very specific kind of relationship\u2014typically heterosexual and rooted in traditional roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But abuse does not follow those rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Domestic violence exists in LGBTQ+ relationships, in polyamorous and ethically non-monogamous (ENM) dynamics, and in connections that don\u2019t fit society\u2019s expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we fail to acknowledge this, we don\u2019t just overlook part of the story\u2014we risk silencing survivors who are already struggling to feel seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udff3\ufe0f\u200d\ud83c\udf08 LGBTQ+ Survivors: Hidden in Plain Sight<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Survivors within LGBTQ+ communities often face deeply personal and unique barriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alongside the fear and control present in any abusive relationship, they may also experience:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Threats of being \u201couted\u201d to family, employers, or their community<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fear of discrimination from law enforcement or support systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Limited access to inclusive shelters and survivor resources<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Internalized shame or concern about reinforcing harmful stereotypes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many, leaving is not just about safety\u2014it can also mean risking identity, community, and belonging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd04 Expanding the Lens: Abuse in Polyamorous and ENM Relationships<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abuse is also present in polyamorous and ethically non-monogamous relationships, though it is far less discussed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Misunderstanding these relationship structures can create dangerous gaps in awareness. Common myths include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cIf multiple people are involved, it can\u2019t be controlling\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cIt\u2019s just jealousy or drama\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cEveryone agreed to it, so it must be healthy\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But consent to a relationship structure is not consent to control or harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abuse in these dynamics may look like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Triangulation\u2014pitting partners against each other<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using other partners to manipulate or punish<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Restricting autonomy under the guise of \u201crules\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emotional isolation within a group dynamic<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The structure may differ, but patterns of power and control remain the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\udde0 Power and Control Can Take Many Forms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At its core, domestic violence is not about gender, orientation, or relationship structure\u2014it is about power and control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In LGBTQ+ and non-traditional relationships, this can include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Weaponizing identity, such as threatening to \u201cout\u201d someone<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Undermining a partner\u2019s gender identity or expression<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using community stigma to silence or isolate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leveraging relationship complexity to confuse or manipulate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No matter the context, abuse often follows patterns of coercion, intimidation, isolation, and emotional manipulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udea7 Barriers to Being Believed<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most harmful realities for survivors in these communities is the difficulty of being believed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may face:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dismissal because the relationship \u201cdoesn\u2019t look abusive\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Judgment tied to sexual orientation or relationship structure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fear of legal complications or custody issues<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Service providers who lack training in LGBTQ+ or ENM dynamics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those in polyamorous relationships, stigma can add another painful layer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat did you expect?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That kind of response doesn\u2019t just hurt\u2014it can keep people trapped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\udd10 The Silence That Protects Abuse<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silence is one of abuse\u2019s most powerful tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In LGBTQ+ and non-traditional relationships, that silence is often amplified by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fear of reinforcing negative stereotypes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pressure to protect marginalized communities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of representation in awareness efforts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not seeing your experience reflected anywhere<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When survivors don\u2019t see themselves in the conversation, they may begin to question their own reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But their experiences are valid\u2014and they matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udc99 Redefining Healthy Relationships<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s important to be clear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Healthy LGBTQ+ relationships exist, polyamorous relationships exist, monogamous relationships exist.<br>Abuse is not defined by the structure of a relationship\u2014it is defined by behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A healthy relationship includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Consent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communication<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Autonomy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mutual respect<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An abusive relationship includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Control<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fear<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Manipulation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Isolation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83e\udd1d How to Be a Truly Inclusive Safe Person<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Supporting survivors means expanding how we show up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Using inclusive language, such as \u201cpartner\u201d instead of assumptions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not minimizing abuse because it looks different<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Believing survivors without judgment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Educating ourselves on LGBTQ+ and ENM dynamics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supporting inclusive resources and services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being a safe person means making space for stories that don\u2019t look like your own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2728 Survivors Exist Everywhere<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not all survivors fit the narrative people expect, all abuse is visible, all relationships look the same, And none of that makes a survivor\u2019s experience any less real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udce2 Call to Action<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We need to widen the conversation, need to listen more closely, need to make space for every survivor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udcac What does a safe, inclusive support system look like to you?<br>\ud83d\udcac How can we do better\u2014for everyone?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
