Yet, in another sense, they were never hidden at all. They were present in the way I treated myself, existed in the shame I carried, appeared through my relationship with my body. Looking back, I can recognize things I could not understand when I was eight or nine years old.

At that age, I did not have the language to explain neglect, abuse, sexual abuse, or the other experiences that shaped me.

I simply knew something inside me hurt.

I Learned to Hate My Body Very Young

My relationship with my body has been complicated for as long as I can remember.

I have worked through eating disorders and body dysmorphia.

There were times when I was sickly skinny.

Later, my weight changed.

Neither version brought peace.

Instead, I found myself criticizing my appearance and searching for everything I believed was wrong with me.

The mirror became a place where I looked for flaws.

Food became connected to emotions that were much bigger than hunger.

My body became something I felt I needed to control.

Underneath all of that was something even more painful.

I did not simply dislike how I looked.

I struggled with how I felt about myself.

That distinction matters.

The Signs Were There, Even When I Could Not Name Them

Children do not always understand trauma in adult terms.

A young child may not think, “I am experiencing emotional abuse.”

They may not understand why neglect hurts.

There may be no words for sexual abuse.

Instead, the pain can come out through behavior, emotions, fears, or beliefs about themselves.

For me, those signals appeared through my relationship with food and my appearance, along with other things.

They surfaced through shame.

Existed within the harsh way I spoke to myself.

Showed up in the belief that I was somehow never enough.

My reflection became a reminder of everything I thought was wrong with me.

Food could become a source of comfort, fear, control, or conflict.

What looked like body-image issues from the outside had a much deeper story underneath.

Abuse Can Change the Way a Child Sees Themselves

Children learn their sense of worth through relationships.

When those relationships involve neglect, humiliation, manipulation, abuse, or sexual harm, a child may begin turning the blame inward.

Instead of thinking:

“Someone hurt me.”

They may begin believing:

“There must be something wrong with me.”

That belief can become deeply rooted.

A child may decide they are unlovable.

They might believe they need to look different to deserve acceptance.

Another child may become obsessed with being perfect because mistakes once felt unsafe.

Someone else might learn to keep everyone happy because conflict feels frightening.

These responses can look completely different.

The underlying message can still be similar:

“I am not good enough.”

Body Dysmorphia Can Become Part of a Much Bigger Story

Body dysmorphia is not simply vanity.

For someone struggling with distorted perceptions of their appearance, the distress can be consuming.

A minor feature may feel enormous.

A reflection can trigger intense criticism.

Reassurance may provide only temporary relief.

For survivors, body-image struggles may also become connected to deeper experiences involving shame, control, worth, or trauma.

That does not mean childhood abuse automatically causes body dysmorphia or an eating disorder.

These conditions are complex and can develop for many reasons.

Still, when a survivor looks back at their history, understanding the emotional experiences surrounding their relationship with their body can become an important part of healing.

For me, learning to separate what happened to me from what I believed about myself has been part of that process.

The Hidden Wounds Can Follow You Into Adulthood

Childhood experiences do not necessarily disappear when childhood ends.

Sometimes, they become beliefs we carry without realizing where they originated.

A survivor may apologize constantly.

Another person may struggle to trust anyone.

Someone else may become extremely independent because depending on people once felt dangerous.

Perfectionism can become a shield.

People-pleasing may become a survival strategy.

Self-criticism can become so familiar that kindness feels uncomfortable.

The outside world may see an adult simply struggling with confidence.

They may not see the child underneath those behaviors.

That child may still be trying to understand why love, safety, or acceptance once felt so uncertain.

My Body Was Never the Enemy

For years, I believed my body was the problem.

It was too thin.

Then it was too heavy.

Something always seemed wrong.

Eventually, I began to understand that my body had been carrying experiences I did not know how to process.

My body was not betraying me.

It was not responsible for what happened, something I needed to punish, something that had carried me through.

That realization did not erase years of struggle.

It did, however, begin changing the conversation I had with myself.

Instead of asking:

“Why can’t I just love my body?”

I could begin asking:

“Why did I learn to hate it?”

That question opened a different door.

Sometimes the Signs Are Hidden Yet Still Obvious

There is an important contradiction in the phrase hidden signs of abuse.

Sometimes the evidence is hidden from everyone around the survivor.

At other times, it is visible but misunderstood.

A child constantly criticizing their appearance may be dismissed as insecure.

Someone struggling with food may be judged instead of supported.

A person who cannot accept compliments may be labeled difficult.

An adult who needs constant reassurance may be called needy.

A survivor who apologizes for everything may simply seem overly sensitive.

Without understanding the history, people may focus on the behavior instead of wondering what created it.

For me, the signs were hidden from my understanding as a child.

They were not hidden from my pain.

My body was communicating something long before I had the vocabulary to explain it.

We Need to Look Beyond What We See

Not every eating disorder comes from abuse, body-image struggle indicates trauma, anxious child has experienced neglect.

Behavior alone cannot tell us someone’s entire story.

Still, troubling patterns deserve compassion rather than ridicule.

Instead of asking:

“Why can’t you just love yourself?”

Consider asking:

“When did you first learn that you weren’t worthy of love?”

Rather than saying:

“You’re too focused on your appearance.”

Try wondering:

“What happened that made appearance feel connected to worth?”

Those questions do not assume abuse.

They create room for understanding.

Sometimes, that space allows a survivor to finally tell a story they have carried silently for years.

The Signs Were Speaking Before I Had Words

My story is not simply about being skinny.

It is not merely about gaining weight.

It is not only about eating disorders or body dysmorphia.

There was something underneath those struggles.

Neglect.

Abuse.

Sexual abuse.

Shame.

Confusion.

Pain.

A child was trying to make sense of experiences she should never have had to endure.

The warning signs lived in the mirror and followed me to the dinner table.

They appeared through self-criticism and insecurity.

They influenced the way I understood worth, acceptance, and love.

What once seemed like separate struggles eventually began looking like pieces of the same story.

The signs were there.

I simply did not know how to read them.

Healing Means Seeing the Whole Story

Healing has not meant pretending the past did not happen.

It has meant learning to see myself with greater compassion.

The little girl who struggled with her body was not broken.

She was trying to survive experiences she could not understand.

The young person who carried shame did not deserve it.

The survivor who hated herself was never responsible for what someone else chose to do.

Those truths can take years to accept.

Sometimes, healing means returning to old memories with a different understanding.

Don’t blaming that younger version of yourself, you begin protecting her.

Ask why she did not speak sooner, you recognize that she may not have known how.

Instead of wondering why she could not simply walk away, you understand that children depend on the adults around them.

Compassion changes the story.

The Signs Were Hidden. But They Were Never Truly Silent.

My body told a story before I knew how to tell it.

Food carried emotions I could not explain.

The mirror reflected more than my appearance.

Shame became part of how I understood myself.

Self-hatred grew from wounds that were never mine to carry.

Looking back, I can finally see the connections.

The signs were not proof that something was wrong with me.

They were evidence that something had happened to me.

And there is a profound difference between those two statements.

I was never the problem.

My body was never the problem.

My younger self was never the problem.

The problem was what happened to her.

Today, I am learning to give that little girl something she deserved all along:

Compassion.

Understanding.

Protection.

Love.

And permission to finally believe that she was always worthy.

Sometimes the signs of abuse are hidden.

Sometimes they are visible to everyone except the person living with them.

And sometimes, they are written across our lives in ways we only understand years later.

For me, the signs were hidden yet never truly hidden.

They were waiting for me to finally understand what they had been saying all along:

I was hurting.

I deserved help.

And none of it was my fault.

Break The Silence Against Domestic Violence

Break The Silence Against Domestic Violence provides survivor-focused support, advocacy, and resources.

Support Line: 1-855-BTS-1777
Hours: 9 a.m.–9 p.m. CST, 7 days a week

If you are experiencing domestic violence, you do not have to navigate it alone.

National Domestic Violence Hotline

The National Domestic Violence Hotline provides confidential support, information, and safety-planning resources.

Call: 1-800-799-SAFE (7233)
Text: START to 88788
Online chat: Available through The National Domestic Violence Hotline.

If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

By Misty Medders Abuse does not always leave visible scars.
