From Victim to Accused: My Story of Surviving Domestic Violence

I was the victim of domestic violence for over 5 years. After being physically abused on a regular basis, I gathered the courage to tell a few friends and family members about the abuse, which was being perpetrated by my own wife. I always had bruises on my face, cuts and bite marks on my fingers, and one time I got a big cut on my head with a sharp object. The abuse continued and her family members were aware of it. However, they never intervened. I went to the police several times to try make a report. Nevertheless, instead of helping me, I was ridiculed by the police officers. One day, I got tired of the constant abuse. I retaliated and hit back. She called the police and I was wrongfully accused of additional things I didn’t do. Now, I have a misdemeanor in my record. From being the abused, I became the alleged abuser. So messed up.
