“Silent Tears: Unmasking Hidden Abuse” Poem by Iris P

Is it you?

Is it me?

Is it the woman sitting in the church pew next to you or me?

Could it be her or you He’s hitting

Yelling at

Abusing?

Is it some other woman we don’t see?

I know it wasn’t just me

Getting abused daily

There are so many others out there

Statistics say 1 in 3

Believe me.

We don’t see them because they are in hiding

Staying silent

Because When they try to speak up people say…

Why did she wait so long

But she has a beautiful home

He’s so nice in the streets.

There’s no way that could be.

Then they ask

Why are you ruining his life?

Why can’t you just be a better wife?

Or

Why are you putting your business in the streets?

Instead of keeping it under lock and key.

Others say

You’re gonna be a single mother

Your never gonna find another (man)

Every relationship has problems

You just need to work harder to solve them

So in despair

Feeling like others don’t understand or care

She goes into hiding

Keeping the silence

While inside she’s silently dying.

Hidden crime.
