“Surviving Abuse: Two Stories of Resilience and Justice”

It’s been about 12 years-I was abused by my coworker-he pulled me aside at work, raped me, strangled me, told me not to scream for anyone. No one believed me that such a nice guy would do that. He ended up slashing my tires, and I tried to kill myself. I went to my manager, showed her my slashed wrists-who didn’t do anything, said he was in love-I worked in a hospital at the time. I went to the director of operations-she cared, and I will always remember that. She had a meeting with him, with security (in case he did anything). He ended up being pushed out and so was my director.
At the same time, my sister was abused by her ex. I received a call at 3am, that’s when I found out she was dating someone and he strangled and water boarded her. Slammed her head against the side of the building multiple times. This had been going on for awhile. Luckily her roommate heard her screams and helped her. We went through years in the courts-he ended up getting 2 years, out on good behavior. His defense was that he strangled her with 1 hand, not 2. We were lucky the judge was a woman-he had done this to 3 other women before, 2 are still in hiding. His ex wife had to get staples in her head because he beat her in front of her kids. He plugged his fingers in her nose and tried to suffocate her, slammed her head against the bathroom sink. Her kids saw everything.
