by Rick Dougherty When I started volunteering for Break The Silence Against Domestic Violence, one of the ideas I pitched was delving heavily into ways
She was fourteen and naive; fifteen and damaged; sixteen and broken. By seventeen, she’d lost her soul with nothing left to believe in. Having lost friendships, hopes, and respect, she blames herself. Deep down, there is nothing left – no voice; no will to live. Afraid that she’ll never be strong enough, she attempts to rebuild, but the wounds haven’t healed yet.
As a pastor’s daughter, Barbara survives incestual abuse as well as sexual assault by a pastor. As she began to open up about her assault, she discovered that she was not the only victim. She was empowered to come forward with other survivors and confronted her abuser, and ultimately, chose to forgive. Barbara found her purpose in helping other survivors and now co-hosts a talk radio show on child abuse.
The collaboration between Theresa’s Fund, DomesticShelters.org, and experts in the field has resulted in the creation and launch of an unparalleled awards program, designed to honor the unsung heroes of the domestic violence movement. From tireless advocates and innovative programs to compassionate shelters and resilient survivors, this comprehensive initiative seeks to recognize and celebrate the multifaceted contributions of individuals and organizations dedicated to combating domestic violence. It’s a platform that shines a spotlight on the invaluable work being done across communities to support survivors and educate the public about the importance of prevention and intervention.

We use a variety of platforms to connect survivors and families. From our social media presence to our Survivor Support Line, our volunteers are available 365 days a year.
Our BTSADV family consists of women, men, and children who are survivors of abuse and families affected by abuse. Their passion for helping others is a constant source of support and connection.
Once clients receive the additional support they need from us, they are equipped and inspired to advocate for others. Encouraging advocacy enables us to build upon our mission with a growing team of volunteers.
All it took was the strength for one domestic violence survivor, BTSADV’s founder, to tell her story for a wildfire of bravery to start. BTSADV was founded and continues to serve the mission of survivors breaking their silence against domestic violence. Sharing your story not only brings healing to yourself but helps provide hope to current victims or fellow survivors of domestic violence.
