A Two-Time Survivor and Her Journey

two-time survivor

By Survivor Barbie

I would love to tell you my story. I am a two-time survivor of domestic violence and abuse.

*The following story is written by a survivor of domestic violence and abuse. Names have been changed to protect all involved.*

The First Attack

I was married to my husband at the time and I lived in another state with him and his sister. His sister was out of town for a few days. My husband is an alcoholic but he usually binge drinks vodka, the cheapest one.

Then I had a doctor’s appointment on the 22nd of September 2009 or 2010. The Dr. had called me to set up an appointment for my foot I think. However, the receptionist heard what was happening with me in the background.

When I got off the phone with the doctor’s office and then I proceeded to call my next door neighbor for help and then he takes the phone out of my hand and he fractures my thumb.

Next he starts yelling and and hitting the back of my head with his fist. I had raccoon eyes, a scratch on my brow. Then I was crawling back to the phone and he had his arm around my neck and his hand was by my mouth. I bit down on his hand as hard as I could, and he fell right away because he was so drunk as a skunk.

Calling the Police and His Arrest

I was able to call 911 and told them what happened and the officer asked me if I was drinking and I said no. My husband walked out of the door down the street before the state police officer came.

I was talking to the officer and my husband was walking back to the house and I said there he is. The officer told me to lock the door and he arrested him.

He was charged with simple assault. He was in jail for 6 months. I took him back and he apologized to me. He had to go to anger management class, AA, and counseling.

My husband then had to see his probation officer every week. He made terroristic threats against me, he would body shame me ad sometimes he would belittle me. He eventually behaved himself.

The Second Attack

The second time he attacked me, he was sober and he had done it out of anger, he shoved me and I fractured my left shoulder blade. I called my neighbor, I said I needed to go to the hospital because my shoulder is hurting.

I told him that I’m going to the hospital because I did something to my shoulder. He bought it. When I got there, I told them everything.

They arrested him and held him overnight and they released him on his own recognizance. He knocked on the door and I called the police. Then I called the shelter and escaped on May 31, 2013.

Moving Forward as a Two-Time Survivor

After I left, I went to the shelter and I had gotten a protection from abuse order against him. I was diagnosed with PTSD back in 2013 by a doctor. I filed for divorce about 3 years ago and it was granted to me.
