When survivors are new to their healing journey, many will take hold of anything they can get their hands on. They will gravitate towards whatever will help them heal. There are several avenues survivors can look towards, including reading one of the plethora of books available on healing. As a matter of fact, the books don’t even have to be on healing. The books can be whatever helps them along their healing path.

Below is a short list of some of the best books out there that can shine a light on a domestic violence situation and help survivors heal.

1.Why Does He Do That: Inside The Minds of Angry and Controlling Men by Lundy Bancroft

Bancroft, a leading expert in his field, offers ways for abused women to arm themselves with the knowledge to catapult them into their healing journey. Survivors will gain incredible new insight into the questions of “why” and “how” the abusive person acts the way they do. The book is split into sections and gives precise insight into what and who the abusive man is.

  1. Psychopath Free by Jackson MacKenzie

MacKenzie is a survivor himself. He took pen to paper and wrote about his own insights about his experience. Reading this book can open a survivor’s eyes rather wide. Survivors will gain tremendous understanding from this book. Abusers hide behind a cloak of normalcy, and MacKenzie’s book will tear down that cloak and give survivors hope for healing and the chance to thrive.

  1. Emotional Blackmail: When The People in Your Life Use Fear, Obligation and Guilt to Manipulate You by Susan Forward

There may be some survivors out there who have never heard of the term “emotional blackmail.” That’s okay, I didn’t either. Reading this book can help survivors gain insight and clarity into just what emotional blackmail is and what abusers do with it to gain the upper hand in an abusive relationship. The author defines emotional blackmail and further defines just what FOG (fear, obligation, and guilt) is. When survivors begin to grasp the tools an abuser uses, that fog begins to clear and the survivors can leap forward into a different realm of understanding that will provide them with the tools they need to heal.

  1. Warrior Magnificent by Jamie Vrinios

This book can give survivors the courage to step forward into the unknown and face their healing journey with courage and a warrior’s heart. Survivors will be reborn and feel energized while seeking a life filled with peace, strength, and clarity. There is a warrior inside all of us and this book can help survivors awaken their fighting spirit.

  1. Tornado Warning by Elin Stebbins

This book is based on the author’s true experiences into teen dating violence. It explores what her world became during and after the abusive relationship. Survivors can gain strength knowing that they can get out of their abusive situation and even thrive post abuse. It’s a real story and can show survivors what life after domestic violence looks like.

  1. But He Never Hit Me by Dr. Jill Murray

Many victims of domestic violence don’t know that abuse can also come in the form of psychological and emotional abuse. Many believe that just because an abuser doesn’t hit them, it isn’t abuse. But Dr. Murray’s book explores the realness of the “invisible” abuse – the abuse that cannot be outwardly seen. The book can help survivors reflect on what truly happened to them and provide motivation to help them heal their lives.

The above books can be immensely beneficial to a survivor’s healing journey. A vast amount of information is presented in each book, therefore giving survivors knowledge to jumpstart their journey. Not all the information will pertain to a particular survivor’s journey, so it is up to the survivor to take what information does pertain to them and process it.
