The Heartbreaking Story of Ashleigh Lindsey: A Mother’s Mission to Break the Silence on Domestic Violence.

The Tragic Loss That Sparked a Movement

On Friday, July 13, 2012, Tara Woodlee’s life changed forever. Her 20-year-old daughter, Ashleigh Marie Lindsey, and her unborn granddaughter, Patience Lynn, were brutally murdered in a horrific act of domestic violence. This devastating event marked the beginning of Tara’s unwavering fight to raise awareness and support survivors.

A Mother’s Worst Nightmare Unfolds

Ashleigh lived with her fiancé, Joshua Mahaffey, and a roommate, Joshua Scott. Sadly, Mahaffey’s abuse became apparent when Ashleigh discovered she was pregnant in April 2012. Although she attempted to leave, Mahaffey manipulated her into returning with empty promises of change.

However, as time passed, the abuse worsened. Mahaffey isolated, controlled, and physically assaulted Ashleigh repeatedly. He not only bruised her body but also shattered her spirit. Despite filing protective orders and seeking help from law enforcement, the threats persisted.

A Desperate Fight for Safety

For weeks, Ashleigh moved between friends’ homes, trying to escape Mahaffey’s control. Sadly, even with protective orders and police intervention, Mahaffey remained a threat. He relentlessly stalked, harassed, and manipulated Ashleigh—making her fear for her life and the lives of her family.

Tragically, on July 13, 2012, Mahaffey, along with Joshua Scott, broke into Ashleigh’s home. Ashleigh locked herself in the bathroom to hide. Mahaffey kicked down the door and shot Ashleigh twice before turning the gun on himself. Despite emergency efforts, Ashleigh succumbed to her injuries alongside her unborn daughter.

Turning Tragedy into Advocacy

After losing Ashleigh and Patience, Tara could have given up. Instead, she turned her pain into purpose. She founded Ashleigh’s Patience Project and became a leading voice in the fight against domestic violence. Today, Tara serves as the President and CEO of Break the Silence Against Domestic Violence (BTSADV), inspiring survivors to break free from the cycle of abuse.

Her powerful story has been featured nationwide, including on the ID Channel’s Your Worst Nightmare in the episode “Cruel Intentions.” You can also hear more about her advocacy and daughter’s story on her YouTube Channel.

Why Sharing Ashleigh’s Story Matters

Every year, millions of individuals suffer in silence. Tara’s story is a heartbreaking reminder of the devastating impact of intimate partner violence. However, it also shows the strength and resilience of survivors and their families.

At BTSADV, we believe no one should face abuse alone. Ashleigh’s story has already saved lives, encouraging others to seek help and leave dangerous relationships behind. Together, we can amplify her legacy and advocate for those who still need a voice.
