Survivor Story: People I Didn’t Know Came Forward to Help after My Children and I Left My Abuser

Written by: BTSADV Survivor

Recently, I watched a show about a murdered domestic violence victim whose experiences were similar to mine. I experienced verbal, emotional, physical, and financial abuse while I was with my ex. Over and over again, I was abused and told I was worthless. There were times where I would leave for a few days, but he would apologize, promising to get help. Every time, I would believe him and go back.

Eventually, I realized if I didn’t leave permanently, he would kill me. I left while he was gone, and I was only able to take my children and some clothes with me, nothing else. I had no idea where to go or what to do. Essentially, we were homeless. We stayed in a hotel room for a week and only had enough money to last through that Friday. However, I eventually was able to get an apartment.

I started over without so much as basic toiletries or household items. My children and I had absolutely nothing and no money. Word spread that we needed help. People I didn’t even know came together and helped us with everyday living essentials, furniture, and even food. God is so good! We don’t need anything at this time in our lives.

Being a single mom who receives no child support to help care for my children, I do still struggle with rent and other bills. Doing this on my own has been one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but I’d rather struggle instead of staying in an abusive relationship.

By far the best thing I have ever done was getting away from my abuser. I am so happy and blessed now. My children and I have a whole new life to live, and I know now that I’m not worthless. I know that I don’t deserve to be abused. I am worthy of being happy! I’m so glad to share my story. I hope that it gives someone out there hope for the future.
